Who we hire

We do not keep a list of open positions on this page. When we hire, it is usually for one of these roles:

  • Field installation technicians: racks, cabling, access points, firewalls and on-site hardware, working with our remote network specialists
  • Systems administrators, junior and senior: Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, backup and endpoint management
  • Network specialists: routing, firewalls, VLANs, VPN, multi-WAN and Wi-Fi on MikroTik, Fortinet, Ubiquiti, Zyxel and Cisco platforms; Cisco experience is especially welcome
  • Software developers: internal web applications, integrations, automation and reporting
  • Helpdesk staff: first contact for client requests, with a two-hour response target during business hours

What the work is like

Every change is scripted, logged and reversible. Every job ends with documentation the client can read. If that sounds tedious, this is not the place; if it sounds like how things should be done, it is.

The work is a mix of remote administration from Georgetown and field visits across Central Texas. Many of our clients are public entities and regulated organizations, so you will spend time in city halls, district offices and medical practices, and you will be expected to treat their data accordingly.

You do and check the work yourself, to house standards set by our licensed Professional Engineer, who is there for the questions that need a licensed engineer. You will learn to work to a written standard and to say plainly what you did, what you found and what you are not sure about. Texas law restricts who may use the title engineer, so our roles are named for what they do.

What you will learn

  • To work to a written house standard, and to help revise it: standards are updated after every job, and the pitfalls list grows with each one
  • Routing, firewalls, multi-WAN failover and VPN on MikroTik, FortiGate, Zyxel and UniFi, from bench build to live cutover
  • Microsoft 365 tenant builds and migrations, Conditional Access, Intune, and retention set to a client's records schedule
  • Windows Server and Active Directory health checks that end in a numbered findings register and a risk register
  • Backup and restore discipline: Veeam, immutable offsite copies, and a restore test you run with the client watching
  • How to write for a client: as-builts, runbooks and assessment reports with a disposition for every device
  • How public entities buy: public-entity terms, open-records rules and the state cybersecurity training mandate

AI tools, with review

We use AI assistants in the engineering workflow: drafting and checking configurations and scripts, analyzing logs and inventories, writing and cross-checking reports and runbooks, and researching vendor documentation. You will learn to use them the way we do: in controlled sessions with access limited to the task, never with client secrets in a public tool, and never as a substitute for understanding what a change does.

Every AI-assisted change is reviewed by a person, logged with a timestamp and a rollback, and approved before it runs. The person who approves it is responsible for it and signs off on it. The tools make the typing faster; the judgment is still yours to learn.

How to apply

Send us your information and resume online, or email a resume and a short note about what you have built or fixed to support@engineeraustin.com with the subject line Careers. We read every application and reply to the ones that are a plausible match.

Screening and confidentiality

Because we serve public-sector and healthcare clients, personnel on those engagements undergo background screening and sign confidentiality agreements before they are given access to client systems. Please be ready for that before you apply.

Start with a written assessment.

Tell us what you have and what is not working. Someone from our team, not a salesperson, replies within one business day by email or phone, and brings in our engineer when your request needs one. The assessment report is yours to keep whether or not you buy anything.
